About
My work depicts scenes with humour and heart. Whether using a dip pen and ink or a twig I’ve found in the garden, I love playing with line to convey energy and expression.
I graduated from the BA illustration degree at Falmouth in 2011 and my first picture book ‘It’s Not JUST a Blanket!’ was published in 2014. (Bonney Press). I have also illustrated several fiction and non-fiction titles for young readers (including the Ballet School and Eureka! series by The Salariya Book Company).
My creative intuition came a-knocking during my first year of motherhood. Such a visceral time of life seemed to expand my creativity, and alongside the illustration, I felt drawn to explore painting in a more abstracted, intuitive way, This realisation coincided with the covid lockdown of 2020 and all of a sudden I was given the time and space to begin exploring. Soon after, my first series of paintings emerged.
“In an increasingly digital world where mistakes are easy to edit, it’s been liberating to surrender to the unpredictable nature of paint.”
In order to keep creativity fresh and exciting, I believe we need to be open to new ways of working. Abstract painting challenges me to work backwards to how I work as an illustrator. In illustration, I start with an idea or brief and draw it out, whereas in painting, the starting point is play, the destination is unknown. At some point a theme ‘emerges’ during the process, and only then do I refine it into what I feel it needs to be. Both expressions excite me and I believe at some point they will meet in the middle, mix together and who knows, maybe something new will emerge? This is the unfolding beauty of creativity.
Inspirations
Motherhood, people-watching, the nearby South West coastline, light and tone, the natural world.
